LORDS OF THE COSMOS: Disciples of Umex Pinup #3 – Pencils

The Villains of LORDS OF THE COSMOS in their third pinup- the pencils were wrapped on this last night, so it’s exciting to share since Decaptor was discussed with Jason Palmatier and Dennis Fallon in early 2014.

“THE DISCIPLES OF UMEX”

DECAPTOR leads the cold evil of CYBER-CRAB, the dangerous MUTANT FLYER and the feline fury of HEXALOR-7 against the heroes of the planet Aiden!

Decaptor held the whole composition hostage until I could get that head made up- he has Laser, Mutation, Monster and Fire as head units, like light bulbs.  I channeled 19982’s THE THING and made a mouth with no eyes- and that set the entire piece to a fruitful ending- one day start to finish. I had scraps on notepads of the MUTANT FLYER from the Umex Pinup with Bonesaw, but Belchor filled that area before I could come up with the flying creature for the bad guys- I just had to use it!

Enjoy these villains before they get you!

Lords of the Cosmos- Mordantix Commission

So this was a personal milestone- the first time I got paid to do a commission of one of my own characters- one of the villains from LORDS OF THE COSMOS- the living acid tank… Mordantix.

I forgot how complex his design was- so I tried to give it all to my client at the Hershey Comic Con in his sketch book, which was filled with other sketches from amazing artists!  Check out your first LORDS OF THE COSMOS Commission- hopefully one of many!

LORDS OF THE COSMOS: Disciples of Umex Pinup #2 – Pencils

The Villains of LORDS OF THE COSMOS in their second pinup- the pencils were wrapped on this last night, so it’s exciting to share since Bonesaw entered my unconscious mind in 2013.

“THE DISCIPLES OF UMEX”

BONESAW leads the vile BELCHOR, the treacherous SILT STALKER and the mental powers of MINDOZER against the heroes of the planet Aiden!

As I flesh out these characters, I made some rough outlines for Bonesaw, as well as a sketch from months ago, this led to the main part of the composition- the living saw man.  And in the spirit of the other two Lords of the Cosmos Pinup, I placed other characters going from side to side- Belchor in the background, Mindozer in the foreground and Silt Stalker just weaving around to really build depth- a fun piece to compose and pencil- so  I will enjoy this for a minute- and them move on to the next Lords of the Cosmos page/pinup/character study!

Below are the original 2013 Bonesaw Sketch (which I think I did at a meeting at work based on the paper it is on!), character study of Bonesaw and Mindozer,  and final pencils for this artwork.

Lords of the Cosmos; Page 1 – Pencils

So a broad establishing shot- the Planet Aiden- home of the action for the LORDS OF THE COSMOS and THE DISCIPLES OF UMEX.

Oddly this was harder than it looked to do, and I had to push myself to make a good composition, my original sketches were very narrow and small, just the kind of thing you would scold someone for in a basic composition class.  I think the simplicity of planets, orbits and circles tended to just blind me to how hard this was to do.

The moons helped build some much needed depth in a bare composition

For an intro page, I think I got the point across.  Welcome to Planet Aiden!

LORDS OF THE COSMOS: Aegeus and the Lords of the Cosmos Pinup #1 – Final Pencils

“Lord Aegeus and Queen Prizm leading the Wasp Soldier Vespulan, Cybernetic Elk Soldier Ant-Lor and their loyal Sargent at Arms the Savage Felinex! as they prepare to fight the evil UMEX and his legions of biologically and mechanically enhanced henchmen on the planet Aiden!”

LORDS OF THE COSMOS… ASSEMBLE!!!

So the flip side of the villains from the first LORDS OF THE COSMOS pinup here now we see the heroes assembling!

It the other side of a coin, reversed direction, but a similar layout/composition to the first pinup of Umex and company.  The hero’s logo worked out well and the demeanor and posture of these characters stand in stark contrast to the villains- this was a really fun piece that drew on my love for Greek Mythology- enjoy, I look forward to inking this in the next few days!  Thanks to my friends Stormy and Anna for giving me some great reference for Queen Prizm!

Below is my initial thumbnail and a design for Queen Prizm that gave me the initial idea for her pose and costume.

** Edited with new pencils after edits on the cat’s head- really needs some actual cat reference after I made the head for Hexalor 7 so realistic, see that artwork here for what I made after this on the evil cat character that made me go back and change this cat character .. and switched the main helmeted hero’s head to a profile- there were some fundamental errors on getting that helmet done correctly on an angle, and the female being a pure profile threw me off.  When I did the pure character study on Aegeus (see above from 11/26/2014) I really had to go back and get this one correct.  Since that newer art had his head on a slight angle, I could go and do this as a side profile and not duplicate myself- so below are the final pencils (top) and the one proceeding it below – internal monologue over!**

SMAUG Commission- Final Pencils

A fun commission for a client- the Peter Jackson Hobbit film version of the Great Dragon- SMAUG!  I really didn’t like the film design, but I think I was able to pull something good out of their design.  Full disclosure, I love the Rankin Bass version of Smaug from 1977 better.  I used the same square edge composition I did on “Skull King” for this one, and It had a really cool graphic design result to the final pencils.

Pittsburgh Comic Con 2014 Commissions

Like a game of pictionary for geniuses, the citizens of Pittsburgh put me to the test with no less than 10 commissions last weekend.  Enjoy.

“Weeping Angel” from Dr. Who Commission – Pencils

Well the Dr. Who project gets to add a new member to my Time Lords Rogue Gallery.  One of the newer show villains- a “Weeping Angel” was commissioned by an awesome fan at Baltimore Comic Con for a gift for his signifigant other’s birthday.  While I need to get Lords of the Cosmos rolling again, I am still getting research done for my next team pinup, and with Pittsburgh Comic Con coming up this weekend, this is a perfect time to fit in this artwork, and add it to my print gallery for future shows and as a portfolio piece.

Work notes- this creature has very little context- they are statues with sharp teeth that only move when you can see them, and they love to have odd hand and arm gestures like they are reaching towards you when “locked” in their static stone state.  I tried to capture that facial expression and outlandish arm/hand gestures as well.  Finally, I added the Tardis for a recognizable background to bring it into the WHOniverse from a graphic sense.

There are two pencils below, the first is a modified photo of the final artwork, I need to ink it very soon, so a full and proper scan is out of the question, I played with the contrast and brightness and it gave the pencils an otherworldly look. The lower penciled piece is a proper scan, but I did some work after it, which is the more completed penciled scan above it.

PREDATOR Vs. ALIEN Commission – Final Inks

I was very  pleased with the fast pace I turned this commission from Baltimore Comic Con around, lots of energy, and I used large areas of black to get it done fast, and the effect of the chiaroscuro really served to highlight the figures in the artwork.  Gotta admit, Im still rooting for Alien!!

A nice bookend piece to my Colonial Marines Vs. Aliens from this winter.  Thanks to my Client Eric who paid me to make this awesome pinup for his collection!

Final Inks, and a photo of Eric with his Dad and I below!

Supergirl & Vampirella Commission From Baltimore Comic Con

More commission mash up fun from Baltimore Comic Con. Supergirl’s blood fed by kryptonite sword to Vampirella by a fan. Who says a blood fetish with a tortured super-heroine from the fans can’t be cool? Thanks to my amazing helper Skittlez in D.C. for introducing me to Marco!!

This was a fairly complicated piece to pull off with limited time, no reference, and a very tired (3rd day of the con!) artist that had been drawing non stop to get “The Living Corpse” and “Alien Vs. Predator” done that weekend as well.

I really liked how Vampi’s face and hair turned out with the dripping blood- the artwork below is from photos of the pencils before the client took it away, so the quality is sort of sketchy – no pun intended.  Enjoy!
