Zombie Mom Commission

They say when life gives you Lemons, make Lemonade- well September 2013 has been alot of doing shows and traveling, and the Infect Scranton Con was, well to put it politely, a rough show (facility, attendance etc.) however, I was lucky to have local tattoo celebrity Lacey Terenzio work the show with me as her first non tattoo convention, and we did a zombie portrait of her and her son Danny for their living room, which I felt really turned out nice for a living dead “life” portrait.

I gotta admit, my mom wouldnt be this cool to commission this work, much less get it for the family room!  Enjoy

DALEK Ground Attack! Pinup – Pencils

So here I am done with the latest comic and…. a left turn on the horizon.

A new foray into “fan art” for a bit- I wanted to get some more appealing mainstream prints for people to buy from me at cons, and to get some additional attention to my work.  So in the words of my fellow artist Mikey Wood, “Sell out a bit!”- so here I am, selling out for fandom. Don’t worry, I’ll survive, with a few more bucks in my pocket to boot, and much more killer portfolio and better prints to sell at shows!

So where to start?

A rarely seen topic at cons and fandom in general- DR. WHO VILLAINS… and first off-The DALEKS!!  Despite the popularity of the show in the last 5 years, I really dont see the awesome villains from this show getting any really great artwork out there (ok ok, Bob Hack rules… but who else?)

Engaged in combat on a foreign world, battle damaged and fighting for the EXTERMINATION of all enemies of the DALEK EMPIRE the DALEK Army fights on to VICTORY!

Lest you think my new love for the Daleks and Dr. Who is not true, I give you this bit of time travel….

At bottom is my old school 12 year old Dalek art from 1987- whoa flashbacks!  And who says a child cant love fascist cyborgs?  Sadly, I bet the folks at conventions would buy this artwork, but that’s another rant for another day!

So back to the artwork at hand.

The middle piece is my 2013 thumbnail and then my final 2013 pencils, for the project… I really pleased with this whole layout and composition, but I must say drawing these guys is WAY harder than you think- those little balls on the skirt- what a freaking PAIN!!  But it looks how I wanted it to turn out!  Really looking forward to the inks on this one!  The theme for this was the Daleks in a “Saving Private Ryan” style attack, lets see these robotic mutant cyborgs actually in a battle for once!

Having not watched the show since the 80’s- Ive been catching up on the Daleks in their post 2005 re-launch, and needless to say, Im not pleased with their insane power up from the classic Pertwee/Baker episodes. In my humble opinion, the …super-powered/ forcefield/ taking on 5 million Cybermen with 4 Daleks is just silly. These guys are small armored tanks, but with an RPG, the right laser, Movellan Bomb or an anti-tank mine, you should be able to take one out- right?

HOWEVER….

I did find an amazing video here of an anime Dr. Who, it is the best Who Ive ever seen on screen, and it got me really inspired for this piece and a whole line of pinups of my favorite Dr. Who Villians!

Since all of the Dalek art I see online and at shows is not action oriented, and you rarely see a damaged Dalek, Im peeling it back to show one on the front lines, destroyed, even the little Dalek mutant inside is trying to get out from the wreckage- would the other Daleks save it? I found some awesome FASA Rpg tech specs from 1985 online (yeah I used to have that stuff back when I watched the show on PBS) on the inner mechanics of the Daleks to flesh it out, and added a Dalek Drone, Dalek on their floating platform, and a Heavy Weapon Dalek to fill out the image. Enjoy, Ill be working on this at Baltimore Comic Con 9/7-9/8 at table A-196 (hint hint!), so stop in and say “Hello”!! Jelly Babies are welcome.

Painted Ladies of San Quentin- Alternate Cover- Final Pencils

The updated pencils for Jessica Belmont for the alternate cover to “Painted Ladies of San Quentin- the Black and White Edition” changes to the bust, arms, hands, detail to the clothing, hair and pillows and sheets of her environment.  Very happy with the progress on this piece- more to come with the inks next.  Ive been reading and studying more on clothing and folds in cloth and better renderings of fabrics, so this is my first attempt to use some of that information to make that a stronger point in my pieces with fabrics and cloth.

Painted Ladies of San Quentin- Alternate Cover- Pencils – First Draft

Using some of my figure drawing art as a basis, Im working on an alternate cover for “PAINTED LADIES OF SAN QUENTIN” for the Black and White edition of the book that I will be coming out with shortly.  The sequential pages are done, so a cover is all that is needed.  And don’t we all need more Jessica Belmont in our lives, and here she is being seductive in her boudoir!  Enjoy, and a last Hurrah for my favorite Painted Lady!

This piece has a way to go, but I wanted to share it with everyone!

The “SKINNY BLACK PROJECT” – Pencils and Layouts

So- these are some cropped pieces (to prevent identifcation of the project) of a pencil layout, figure study and final pencils of a project I have dubbed “SKINNY BLACK” after the rapper from the amazing film from Director Craig Brewer, “Hustle and Flow”, which as a relative unknown creator is one of those films I watch to get inspired and fired up to create.  So this post is more about how I feel like “D-Jay” from that film, so click on the link, watch D-Jay, and to take one his quotes and change it a bit to suit my artistic endeavours…. “if you can feel my art, you can feel me”.

Pull up a chair for a minute…..

FUBAR Press Pinup – Medieval Zombie Soldier

So my very cool friend I met at NYCC 2012, Jeff McComsey is one of the leaders of a small press outfit that makes comics about the Zombie World Wars, alternative cool history stuff with loads of violence.  This company is called FUBAR PRESS , and we talked for a long time about me making a pinup for them- well that time is now!

They are doing a book about Medieval Zombie warfare, so that was my task to complete- so this is the process of my research into a 3rd Crusade (1189–1192) Christian Knight, and the anatomy I pulled on the large and small intestines.  My goal was to really have some large scale physical damage.  This included an impalement, torn off face, distended ripped in half jaw and a full disembowelment- along with historically accurate gear and clothing.  I think I am on the right path!  Enjoy the carnage, inks coming soon!

I’ll post links to get the comic this will appear in when I have more information!

6/27/13 – Nude Figure Studies in Pencil with Model- At Art Alliance of Central PA

Back at the tables for figure drawing, and it was good to be back again in training!  We had a really good model for this session, he had amazing muscletone and definition, some really creative poses, and wasnt afraid to hold out until his arms and legs fell asleep!  I was really pleased with the last three longer poses, I didnt move, and just drew from whatever angle presented itself, which is always a challenge to go from non traditional POV’s.

6/13/13 – Nude Figure Studies in Pencil with Model- At Art Alliance of Central PA

Shaking off a few months of self imposed rust (cough cough – 22 inked pages of Painted Ladies of San Quentin done in 23 weeks!!) to get back an anatomy/figure drawing session with our new model, Cristen, at the Art Alliance.

I was really bummed with my first few quick sketches, but the last hour long pose of her in a reclining resting position turned out really well.I was really happy with the hands and torso.  In addition I caught some really nice skin shading to go along with my Patrick Nagel inspired hair.  I also think I did Cristen’s tattoos justice as well!
