6/27/13 – Nude Figure Studies in Pencil with Model- At Art Alliance of Central PA

Back at the tables for figure drawing, and it was good to be back again in training!  We had a really good model for this session, he had amazing muscletone and definition, some really creative poses, and wasnt afraid to hold out until his arms and legs fell asleep!  I was really pleased with the last three longer poses, I didnt move, and just drew from whatever angle presented itself, which is always a challenge to go from non traditional POV’s.

Shaking off a few months of self imposed rust (cough cough – 22 inked pages of Painted Ladies of San Quentin done in 23 weeks!!) to get back an anatomy/figure drawing session with our new model, Cristen, at the Art Alliance.

I was really bummed with my first few quick sketches, but the last hour long pose of her in a reclining resting position turned out really well.I was really happy with the hands and torso.  In addition I caught some really nice skin shading to go along with my Patrick Nagel inspired hair.  I also think I did Cristen’s tattoos justice as well!

Commissions Wizard World Philadelphia – June 2013

Two nice commissions I did for two awesome fans in Philadelphia at Wizard World last weekend….

#1- A Dragon’s Head

#2- the LIZARD from Spiderman

Really pleased with both pieces-!  See the work, and the fans with their pieces below!

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 13-14- two page battle sequence

The two page fight sequence spread- from thumbnail – to pencils, to final inks.

This is the “behind the scenes” anatomy of how I made this complex two page gun and sword battle.  It really is fun to see some of the small doodles get fully rendered now after all of these months!

3/28/13 – Nude Figure Studies in Pencil with Model- At Art Alliance of Central PA

Another Strong anatomy/figure drawing session with our model Marcell at the Art Alliance- I was really pleased with the sketch of Marcell holding his head, and the quick 2 min sketch of him in a track runner pose.

The longer poses also turned out well, especially the last one – I was able to get some really nice shading and rendering on the shadows and skin tone (it’s the first one after the text here!)

3/7/13 – Nude Figure Studies in Pencil with Model- At Art Alliance of Central PA

My latest figure drawing session- this week’s Model- Mel- is a Master’s Degree student getting her MFA right now, and she pulled no punches and gave us a tough modeling session, and showed that she is almost super human in holding tough poses to make us all work harder- thanks Mel for the great poses!

2/28/13 – Nude Figure Studies in Pencil with Model- At Art Alliance of Central PA

Another great anatomy/figure drawing session with our model Danna Jayne at the Art Alliance- the final 45 minute prone pose from the back was hard, but really really please with the outcome.  I also liked the 2 minute leg pose I drew- simple , yet elegant!

Setsucon 2013 – Fan Commissions

Two fan commission pencil sketches from SETSUCON 2013 in State College, PA- an Anime Character, and Blade, from Marvel Comics

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 22- LAST PAGE- Pencils

Jessica Belmont is hanged until dead in a California Prison in the 1850’s, and we see the land that was fought over is now the present day 2013 SAN QUENTIN State Prison in California… – The End

I loved the top hangman’s noose panel with the Flag of the state behind Jessica hanging from the gibbet, and the last panel is stark and sums up what it was all about- land for a prison to be built on that is there 160+ years into the future.  Now onto the editing, and inking process with my writer Kevin Truglio who has stepped in to fill David’s shoes to make sure we hit all the script points so this works when you read it later in 2013.

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 21- Pencils and Edited Top Panel

Elijah rides off into the proverbial sunset and Jessica in a few years is arrested and walking death row in the California 1850’s era prison system…

I wanted to give Elijah a stern look while on Chinaman’s horse, and show Jessica without her fancy hair, attitude and finery, cut down in prison stripes- this page is really about closure, and effectively shows us the elements- Elijah leaving in a cliche way, but a nice angle/POV, the hads shackled and her walking the row, with the priest giving last rites in the background while she looks up at the hangman’s noose (see next page)

UPDATE- I made an alteration on the top panel- see correction above the page- I fixed some perspective and anatomy issues with the horse and Elijah- much better- thanks Joe and Jeff!
