KNIGHT SABERS- SANJO!!! Bubblegum Crisis Pinup- Pencils

One of the greatest OVA’s of All time from the late 80’s early 90’s- BUBBLEGUM CRISIS! Quick synopsis… Fetish Armored Girls fighting Terminator like robots with cool weapons…  does it get better than that?  I really wanted to get some original poses and cool angles to make the kinetic action from the show come to life in 2d board- and this piece really hit it after a few aborted tries. I love Priss in this flipped spread eagle pose and the close up Boomer from Ep. 1 “Tinsel City Rhapsody” with the gatling gun being absorbed into it’s arm just hits that Boomer look of menace that we loved on VHS when I first discovered it in 1992- hoping to get this inked soon in time to sell at Setsucon! The character models for Priss and Boomer Androids (original design by Art God – Kenichi Sonada) are below my pencil work- I wanted to get the characters as accurate as possible, but use no poses from the show or any other BGC art that was out there so I got the model sheets and ran with it and tried to avoid the great art that is out there to maximize my original vision of this incredible animation that I still love to this day 20 years later.  Enjoy Anime fans- this is my first Anime based work- and as the Knight Sabers (the cute armored girls) say on the show- SANJO!!

Belle Fera- Model’s Pencil Drawing from Figure Modeling

Belle Fera-The Promotional Fetish Model I do comic shows with- had me do a pencil drawing of her so we can do her as a print to sell at shows.  This is a basic framework platform of her figure/body so we can dress her like a paper doll to match her convention outfits, or do special prints for clients who want some original artwork of her.

Check her out at Belle Fera Model on Facebook, hit her up for some modeling work at an event, or ask about some original art we can make up together for you of her in an outfit, or catch us at a live event to see what we have cooked up!

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 6- Pencils.. Full Page Splash- “Kill the Chinaman!”

So this is page 6 of “Painted Ladies of San Quentin”- and it’s on.  A full splash page that I give credit to Aaron Kuder of Marvel fame for telling me at NYCC 2012- “get the hands in the foreground, up close” and he showed me a cover he did from Avengers for me to think on- see attached photo.  Keeping this in mind, I did three elements- a horse, jumping “Chinaman” with weapons, and Elijah’s revolver shooting and missing in the foreground. All three are in motion in a triangular pattern on the page, with the ground on an angle.  I’m pleased with all three elements, and the motion and action (whoa Chinaman jumping off the horse!!) the hand close up brings it all to a sense of immediate action which makes the whole splash page work- thanks for the tip Aaron!

As an aside- I did this on a scrap of paper in my niece’s 3rd grade class on 11/26/12 in a child’s chair and desk in the back of her art class while I sat in while we were in Florida for Thanksgiving.  I had no references, and did it in 90 minutes, and as my UGLI Studios collaborator and friend Brian Allen said- “I love the expression on the horse.  He’s like F This!”

Elephant God; ” Yag-Kosha” – Pencil Sketch

This is a little sketch I did over Thanksgiving in Florida at my Neice’s 3rd grade class I sat in on 11/26/12 – it ended up being my Yag-kosha from Robert E. Howard’s “Tower of the Elephant”- from his classic CONAN short stories… Im going to do a Conan Poster sometime… this might be a basis for it.  Note- this was supposed to just be an animal drawing in a class with kids, of course I ended up giving it arms, since that is how I roll.

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 5- Pencils

The 5th page of the Painted Ladies of San Quentin- the flash back ends with a visual device of blurred vision and Elijah’s eyes closing from his POV in P1-2, and then to bring it back to the present characters getting ready to clash a side worm’s eye view of the horse carrying the Chinaman (fond of the panel- really love how this turned out!) and Elijah getting ready for a fight now that he is in the present again- in P’s 3 and 4 respectively.  Also went for a lower angle side shot of the head turn on Elijah-thanks Brent Peeples from NYCC for tipping me off to more dynamic head turns during a folio review!

Also, Im getting more comfortable drawing the pistols of the era- practice makes perfect on them!

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 4- Pencils

The flashback continues on page 4 with a nice alternative twisted POV for Elijah running to the house in p1, a closeup on the Sheriff’s face in p2, and a nice 2×4 upside the head from Jessica to Elijah in a violent p3 (really liked Elijah’s face construction in this panel) which starts to wind up the flashbacks to set up the action that takes the story to the fighting, guns and blood once we get the exposition part of the story set up, which is what everyone wants in a western about vengeance, killers and double crossin’!  Some good old fashion old west killin’….. right pardner?

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 3- Pencils

The third penciled page from Painted Ladies of San Quentin- really tried to get creative with the Sheriff’s obese body, a worms eye viewpoint on the P1 shot- a nice profile of the Chinaman in P2 (does he look like he is up to no good or what?!) , and a flashback moshup of three of the dying painted ladies in p4,5,6 which overlays a top down POV of the whorehouse burning with Elijah’s face superimposed over it which leads into page 4.

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 2- Pencils

Second penciled page of Painted Ladies of San Quentin- dramatic entry for the Chinaman, The Sheriff and Jessica Belmont as they plot to kill our protagonist, Elijah Holman.  Really happy with all four panel layouts- nice intros to all 4 characters, and tried to mix up the page with a tilted angle on p1, and a closeup on p4- and I like the sword opening from the Chinaman on p3.  I also like the pencil shadowing on Jessica’s leg on panel 2, a “happy accident”- as a famous PBS painter used to say while doing landscapes….

“A Once Crowded Sky” -Character Pinup- THE SURVIVOR- Final Inks

The final inked version of the character “Survivor” from the Tom King Novel- A Once Crowded Sky .   I tried to use more solid blacks for the Nazi uniform as well as the Roman General armor, I think that the bold blacks really made the sides of the image pop out.  Also the final effect of the Tryptych turned out well if you cover up the sides of the piece to break out the indivual  elements of it- sort of like a classic MAD MAGAZINE “fold in”.
