Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 3- Final Inks

Page 3 of 22 now is 100% inked- this page ended up being a nightmare of architectural proprtions, T&G shadowed ceilings, wood siding, over head shot of a terra cotta building burning, multiple facial emotion shots and three burning women… and yet – it turned out gorgeous (in my opinion) what do you think?

KNIGHT SABERS- SANJO!!! Bubblegum Crisis Pinup- Final Inks

The inked version of my new anime artwork from Bubblegum Crisis- note the edits on Priss’s left leg (girl in the air) and the Gatling Gun is fleshed out a bit more.  Overall this gave a classic pen and ink look to a very glossy anime subject- as a fan, I enjoyed seeing my work give a new take and style to something I am a fan of!

I am having this piece colored for fans to buy at SETSUCON in State College, PA in January (1/26-1/27)

Lion and Rose Handmade Soap- Packaging Logo

So in a blast from the past, and a reuse of some older art from “back in the day” from the end of my Lambda Chi Alpha artwork phase (2001)- here is my old “Rampant Lion and Rose” being used on a boutique handmade soap packaging from a wonderful lady, Shelly Cleveland Morris, in Beaverton, Oregon- thanks internet for spreading the word!  I think this really looks fun and classy, and I would have never thought to use this artwork like this, but unless it’s monsters or people killing each other, what do I know really?

So check out Shelly Morris’s new soaps, and buy a bar for goodness sake!

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 2- Final Inks

The tension builds to the coming violence in the inked second page of the “Painted Ladies of San Quentin” – Introducing Jessica Belmont, the Sheriff and the Chinaman.  I kept up the high detail on siding, soffit, wainscoating and cracked plaster.  Note- I added the banditos to the wanted posters in the background of panel #2, we call that “foreshadowing” ladies and gentlemen for the next round of villains, and also let you know by doing this how crooked Jessica and the Sheriff are in the schemes to profit from murder in 1800’s California.  I also was pleased with the extreme closeup of Jessica’s face, I felt it had the right mix of sexy and menace… enjoy! I’ll keep posting pages pencilled and inked as I complete them compadres!

Grizelda- Marker Sketch – Small Commission Piece

A small sketch of Grizelda for a fan I did this weekend- this was done in about 15 minutes with some markers.  This had more of a raw look than the finished pages of a typical page for me, so while it has some raw feeling to it, I think it’s got some vibrant energy to it.

“A Once Crowded Sky” -Character Pinup- THE SURVIVOR- Final Inks

The final inked version of the character “Survivor” from the Tom King Novel- A Once Crowded Sky .   I tried to use more solid blacks for the Nazi uniform as well as the Roman General armor, I think that the bold blacks really made the sides of the image pop out.  Also the final effect of the Tryptych turned out well if you cover up the sides of the piece to break out the indivual  elements of it- sort of like a classic MAD MAGAZINE “fold in”.

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 1- Final Inks

The inked first page of “Americano: The Painted Ladies of San Quentin” the inks were- well a PAIN!!  The building renderings were brutal, I had 10 hours in the india ink phase of this, and I have a real appreciation for the difficulty in hand rendering buildings at this point.  I think the piece is a great setup for the hard core western story to follow- enjoy the pencil comparison to the inks.  Special notice to the wierd vein that breaks the panel on Elijah’s right hand and the detail in the burned building in panel two – hats off to the master of illustrated rubble/destruction- Katsuhiro Otomo who inspires me to do better destroyed stuff than anyone else!!
