Jason Lenox Unleashes Access to his Works in: ‘The Art of Jason Lenox, Collection 1’

State College, PA – (November 27, 2012) — Jason Lenox, a freelance illustrator, has put together his first art book: ‘The Art of Jason Lenox, Collection 1’.   The pieces were selected by Jason Lenox himself and is a representation of the past two years of his artistic journey -combining comic art, concept art, role-playing game art, and pinups. Some of the pages are new pieces created for the book, and some are never before seen personal projects he is now ready to share with fans and collectors for the first time. ‘The Art of Jason Lenox’ is a mix of color and black and white illustrations throughout the 32 pages, quotes from the last year of reviews and press, and a new forward written by author David Paul.  ‘The Art of Jason Lenox, Collection 1’ offers insight and a behind the scenes look into Jason’s creative process with his exotic, sexy and violent projects. The book and Jason’s artwork  are available for purchase online at www.jasonlenox.com/online-store.

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 5- Pencils

The 5th page of the Painted Ladies of San Quentin- the flash back ends with a visual device of blurred vision and Elijah’s eyes closing from his POV in P1-2, and then to bring it back to the present characters getting ready to clash a side worm’s eye view of the horse carrying the Chinaman (fond of the panel- really love how this turned out!) and Elijah getting ready for a fight now that he is in the present again- in P’s 3 and 4 respectively.  Also went for a lower angle side shot of the head turn on Elijah-thanks Brent Peeples from NYCC for tipping me off to more dynamic head turns during a folio review!

Also, Im getting more comfortable drawing the pistols of the era- practice makes perfect on them!

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 4- Pencils

The flashback continues on page 4 with a nice alternative twisted POV for Elijah running to the house in p1, a closeup on the Sheriff’s face in p2, and a nice 2×4 upside the head from Jessica to Elijah in a violent p3 (really liked Elijah’s face construction in this panel) which starts to wind up the flashbacks to set up the action that takes the story to the fighting, guns and blood once we get the exposition part of the story set up, which is what everyone wants in a western about vengeance, killers and double crossin’!  Some good old fashion old west killin’….. right pardner?

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 3- Pencils

The third penciled page from Painted Ladies of San Quentin- really tried to get creative with the Sheriff’s obese body, a worms eye viewpoint on the P1 shot- a nice profile of the Chinaman in P2 (does he look like he is up to no good or what?!) , and a flashback moshup of three of the dying painted ladies in p4,5,6 which overlays a top down POV of the whorehouse burning with Elijah’s face superimposed over it which leads into page 4.

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 2- Pencils

Second penciled page of Painted Ladies of San Quentin- dramatic entry for the Chinaman, The Sheriff and Jessica Belmont as they plot to kill our protagonist, Elijah Holman.  Really happy with all four panel layouts- nice intros to all 4 characters, and tried to mix up the page with a tilted angle on p1, and a closeup on p4- and I like the sword opening from the Chinaman on p3.  I also like the pencil shadowing on Jessica’s leg on panel 2, a “happy accident”- as a famous PBS painter used to say while doing landscapes….

Painted Ladies of San Quentin; Page 1- Final Inks

The inked first page of “Americano: The Painted Ladies of San Quentin” the inks were- well a PAIN!!  The building renderings were brutal, I had 10 hours in the india ink phase of this, and I have a real appreciation for the difficulty in hand rendering buildings at this point.  I think the piece is a great setup for the hard core western story to follow- enjoy the pencil comparison to the inks.  Special notice to the wierd vein that breaks the panel on Elijah’s right hand and the detail in the burned building in panel two – hats off to the master of illustrated rubble/destruction- Katsuhiro Otomo who inspires me to do better destroyed stuff than anyone else!!

The first page of my next story with David Paul for UGLI STUDIOS PRESENTS #2- “The Painted Ladies of San Quentin”- our western grindhouse story… welcome to the mean streets of SQ and our main character Elijah Holman….

The Painted Ladies of San Quentin- UGLI STUDIOS PRESENTS #2 Complete Wrap Around Cover- Inks

The Complete Wrap Around Cover: I think the old time Flag really brought this image home by unifying the image.  I also felt the image tells the story and gives us a look at the style and imagery of this project (an old 19th century “engraved look”), and a “who’s who” of all of our characters in San Quentin. Finally, I thinkwhat the second issue of UGLI STUDIOS PRESENTS is all about- unique artwork done at a high level of detail, with new takes on older story styles (in this case the classic western genre)- while also being a solid cover that also doubles as a great print/poster to promote the project!

The Painted Ladies of San Quentin- UGLI STUDIOS PRESENTS #2 Front Cover Closeup- Inks

The inked front cover to complete the Wrap Around poster cover of UGLI STUDIOS PRESENTS #2- Featuring our Protagonist Elijah Holman, and Antagonist Jessica Belmont in front of the 1850 U.S. Flag.  The hardest elements to draw turned out to be the best- the old revolver, the silk hand fan , and Jessica’s evil face- with a touch of fun/sexiness- all worked, and really made this image pop. Hello “Painted Ladies of San Quentin” and the beginning of USP #2!

The Painted Ladies of San Quentin- UGLI STUDIOS PRESENTS #2 Back Cover Closeup- Inks

The inked back cover to USP #2.  I tried to go for very little solid black, and really work to have a lined set of textures like an old engraving to give it an old time, antiqued look.  The Star Field on the flag was a pain to stiple, but I thought it really was a nice backdrop that looked like an old weathered flag.
