This is my finalist entry into the “INDIGLOW” black light art contest sponsored by RED BULL at the Nightclub INDIGO in State College, PA. The theme was to use a 4×4 gator board and take artwork that we entered on facebook in the preliminary round and make it a “black light” poster. I entered page 4 of the GREAT VERMIN short story. This was difficult since I dont paint normally, I dont like large surfaces to work on, and fluorescent paint is almost impossible to work with. While difficult, I was pleased with the final result- win or lose! So here are some progress pictures I took of the project from start to finish. The second page of pencil work for a short story I am doing for the Independent Anthology Book : “The Gathering”. Items of note- I was pleasantly surprised with the hand compositions in panels 5 & 6. Also, this page had 8 panels to get all the assigned story in, I thought I was able to convey it pretty well with as much content that had to be compressed into this space. I also included a scan of my thumbnail as well to show the creative process from where I start on complicated pages.

A page of pencil work for a short story I am doing for the Independent Anthology Book : “The Gathering”. I was really pleased with the layout, and the opening eye on panel #3.

This is the inked pinup (part one of two) for the Heroes of the classic 1980’s Saturday Morning Cartoon- “THUNDARR- THE BARBARIAN”. Great show that I just picked up last year on DVD, and this is my tribute to the show. Have OOKLA, THUNDARR, and ARIEL ever looked this good? I worked to have a classic “fine” art look to these characters, which is in contrast to the normal 80’s quality generic cartoon appearance they always had. I was really pleased especially with Thundarr’s Sun-Sword and Ariel’s magic- I tried using some different inking techniques to make the effect of their unique weapons stand out- Ookla, well, he has his claws and mean face.
This is the final page of the “Through the Eyes of Grizelda” project. I really liked the peace and calm of this page compared to the high action/violence of the prior pages. It was a nice “book end” to the first page which started with the Cat’s Eye- to Grizelda sitting, to this page with Grizelda sitting (and getting petted- the motive for all of her actions!) to the final shot of the closeup of the Cat’s eye and the Great Beast to close it out. Also, I really was happy with the closeup of the wrinkled skin of the Necromancer, It turned out to be creepy like I wanted it to. The Kickstarter Campaign to bring this to a final colored state should be out shortly, and feel free to comment on this project- thanks!
What else can I say about this awesome promotional piece made by the Wizard of Words, David Paul? The work speaks for itself. Thanks David for making this outstanding poster, Hell- I want to go out and buy this right now!!
Another page closer to the end, and one to go! This was a very labor intensive page. Some notes of interest- I left Grizelda as a photo negative “white” as opposed to her normal black in the transformation panel on the left. I also felt this as a good counter image to the first transformation scene. I tried a new kind of stipling on the right panel at the bottom smoke, and the fire chalice at the top, I was pleased with the effect. Also, I added my friend Don Carpenter as the bottom Left Zombie soldier, I altered the appearance to look like him, if he was an undead soldier. Congratulations Don, you are now a mindless servant of Evil!
