Ink Experiment
A small pen and ink experiment to work out some textures and shadowing ideas I’ve been thinking on… some Chiaroscuro… an Italian term which literally means ‘light-dark’ , and some negative space work on the feet to go with the cleaner texture on the animal skull. We’ll see if I can use some of these tricks in my future pen and ink work.

OGLAF Tribute Artwork: “Mistress and Laser Falcon”
One of my new favorite comics to read is OGLAF which is published online weekly by Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne– I highly recommend it, thanks to my Color Goddess Dani Kaulakis for introducing it to me! Trudy and Doug are super talented folks who are not only making a beautiful looking weekly web comic, but a really sharply written one as well that makes for a great read every time! I did this piece originally as one of my nude figure studies on 10/4/12, but when asked to do a charity piece of artwork for an auction, I modified my nude study into one of my favorite characters from OGLAF, “THE MISTRESS”. It was simple process to add one of her classic outfits from the comic strip to the nude figure model, then I added her Deadly “LASER FALCON” to complete the transformation into a complete OGLAF scene. I thought it was a fun take on two great characters to do them in my style and make them both a bit more realistic than their normal stylized cartoon forms. This original pencil piece will be at the ROCCON convention Ill be at later this month on 10/28/12, framed and on the selling block to raise money for Autism Research!

10/4/12 – Nude Figure Studies in Pencil with Model- At Art Alliance of Central PA
Nude portrait drawings with pencil on 12×18 paper- studies range from 2 minutes to one hour. A great way to catch up on a classic artistic exercise and study some real life anatomy up close.
S.C.A.R. Derby- Happy Valley Dolls vs. Crown City Rollers – Nov 10th, 2012 Bout Poster- Inks with Final Edits v.3
The “final” inked version of the promo poster for the S.C.A.R. Happy Valley Dolls November bout- cleaned up, offensive material deleted, safe for kids. Everyone is happy and content. The colored version will be around town before you know it! “Death Goddess” – Pencils
Since the original Derby Goddess has been scrapped to a more PC “Good Girl” art, I took the original and stripped it down to make her evil twin “Bad Girl”- the Death Goddess. Now she has a purse of faces stitched together filled with human bodies, the doll parts are real parts now (heads and arms/hands) and she has all the blood added back to her face and blade. The interesting thing is to see how the Derby Goddess (Bottom Right) turned into two different pieces, (Good Girl- Bottom Left and Death Goddess, main top image) so that’s kinda neat to see three iterations on the same theme/piece.

Another round of edits to make this piece more politically correct. Most of the detail has been removed, sword, doll heads, doll parts are out, skulls are now altered to be more “friendly”

The Painted Ladies of San Quentin- UGLI STUDIOS PRESENTS #2 Complete Wrap Around Cover- Inks
The Complete Wrap Around Cover: I think the old time Flag really brought this image home by unifying the image. I also felt the image tells the story and gives us a look at the style and imagery of this project (an old 19th century “engraved look”), and a “who’s who” of all of our characters in San Quentin. Finally, I thinkwhat the second issue of UGLI STUDIOS PRESENTS is all about- unique artwork done at a high level of detail, with new takes on older story styles (in this case the classic western genre)- while also being a solid cover that also doubles as a great print/poster to promote the project!
